Apparently, Hippo Frequent Eating Meat

The hippopotamus is one animal that has a large size. And we would imagine if those creatures are slow eaters or herbivores grass. They also often spend most of his time, wallowing in the water.
Hippos would normally leave the water in the late afternoon, to travel up to 10 kilometers inland or woods to find fresh grass that is their primary food source.
Hippopotamus large, able to consume about 68 kg of grass every night, for about five hours, but sometimes eat water plants. But is it true hippopotamus true herbivores such as elephants?

The researchers claim, a large aquatic mammals is not 100 percent vegetarian, they regularly eat meat.
Typically, cannibalism among hippos occurs if the carcass to stop them from starving, but it is a common occurrence.
The team of researchers from four continents have shown that eating meat for hippos often happens, though plentiful supply of grass.
"Carnivores by hippos instead of deviant behavior in certain areas, but this pattern of behavior occurs everywhere as eastern and southern Africa," the researchers said we quoted from the Mail Online.
For example, a number of adults observed hippos eat their own brothers in the Luangwa River in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia in the rainy season. Previous studies, hippos recorded eating animals such as elephants, impala and wildebeest.

In fact, the study also noted, there have been reports of breeding hippos in the zoo to kill and eat a wide variety of animals, including tiny pygmy hippopotamus, tapir, wallabies, and flamingos, this shows the meat is not only an option when other food is scarce.
Experts believe the behavior of the hippopotamus is due to agonistic and territorial extremely aggressive towards conspecifics and other vertebrates. It is reinforced by jaw in hippos and fangs, which have evolved to fight and useless for grazing.
The study notes if the mouth of the hippopotamus is capable of opening up to 180 degrees, it has the characteristics associated with carnivores.
"The phenomenon of carnivores by hippos is very important to an understanding of their susceptibility to disease," said Joseph Dudley, one of the study's authors Mammal Review.
